Gum Screening
Gum health is paramount to maintaining teeth for the long term. So much so that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. That’s why gum evaluation is a critical part of the DAG Comprehensive Exam!
Dental Cleanings
Dental cleanings allow for a thorough evaluation to ensure the health of teeth and gums. These cleanings are critical to assist patients in removing the hardened plaque (tartar) that is unable to be removed during daily home dental hygiene.
Deep Cleaning
Scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning, is a critical step in re-establishing gum health. The accumulation of bacteria and plaque on the teeth below the gum line causes bone loss; if left untreated, this bone loss can then result in tooth/teeth loss. Scaling and root planing involve cleaning both above and below the gum line to promote a healthy tissue environment that supports a strong smile.
DAG Periodontal Disease Program
The DAG Periodontal Disease Program is a solution created by Dental Arts Group to help patients save their teeth from the devastating effects of gum disease. A patient that has been diagnosed with periodontal disease has periodontal pocketing (poor attachment between the tooth and gum), bleeding, bone loss, hard plaque under the gums, and sometimes discharge and tooth loosening. Obviously, the earlier periodontal disease is diagnosed, the more predictable treatment will be.Â
The first step of the DAG Periodontal Disease Program involves deep cleaning.
- Deep cleaning removes the hardened plaque that encourages more bone loss. Deep cleaning is typically completed over two visits under the comfort of local anesthesia (Novacaine).Â
The most important part of the DAG Periodontal Disease Program is the next step: the Re-Evaluation Care Appointment.Â
- This visit occurs one month following the last deep cleaning appointment. At the re-evaluation care visit, our hygienists and dental professionals are evaluating the gum’s response to the deep cleaning.Â
Following up on healing after scaling and root planing consist of evaluating the gum pocketing and overall health and bleeding of tissues.Â
- At this re-evaluation, the patient is educated on the next best course of action. Depending on healing, the most common two follow-up paths are either increased cleaning and maintenance visits and/or referral to a gum specialist for consultation on potential surgical intervention.
Periodontal MaintenanceÂ
When pre-treatment gum disease is more on the mild or moderate side and the gums respond well to therapy, increased cleanings (increasing to every three months) are recommended. This is the best course of action to maintain current periodontal conditions and bone. Periodontal disease is typically a lifetime diagnosis and there is no cure. These increased cleanings and evaluations, (maintenance appointments), allow for constant supervision of gum health to prevent sudden irreversible changes such as extreme bone loss and teeth loosening.Â
Periodontal maintenance appointments typically continue for several years after starting the DAG Periodontal Disease Program or until patients are able to transition back to longer intervals if desired.
Periodontist ConsultationÂ
Occasionally, the initial disease presentation is so severe that even after following a deep cleaning, an increased frequency of cleanings is not enough. In these cases, gum and bone issues have irreversibly altered the shape and form of the gum. In order to re-create a stable and healthy environment for the teeth, gum specialists consult with patients about interventions possible to save teeth. Even if a periodontist referral is indicated, patients continue with periodontal maintenance appointments after completion of the periodontist’s treatment.
